Here’s a great example. Yesterday was Election Day in America and millions of people turned out in support of banning gay marriage. I’m not gay, but if I was I would refuse to pay my taxes. We speak of the greatness of America that would elect Barack Obama, but Americans proved how despicable they are as individuals by choosing to limit the rights of others on an issue that does not even affect them. In one state, Arkansas, the people voted to prohibit gay couples from adopting children. I’m embarrassed to be an American. In considering my thoughts on the subject of homosexuality, I have often wondered what a “heterosexual lifestyle” looks like. The reality, you might be surprised to know is that the only thing that distinguishes homosexuals from heterosexuals is that heterosexuals seek out life partners and sex partners that have different genitalia from themselves while homosexuals seek out life partners and sex partners that have the same genitalia as themselves. That’s it.

Both subsets of our society love their families, struggle in their professions, Love their country, drive minivans, S.U.V’s, crossovers, sedans and coups. Both subsets struggle to articulate their spirituality. Both bleed red. Both want good things for children and bad things for criminals. Both pay taxes. Both hate George Bush, and both love him. The fact is that there is no such thing as a “homosexual lifestyle”. There exists “homosexual sex style” but even heterosexuals classify their preferred sex styles. Both heterosexuals and homosexuals are prone to disease, and indeed even that disease that was once ascribed to homosexuals grows faster among heterosexuals than homosexuals. (Thank education for that). Homosexuals take things like condoms more seriously per capita than their heterosexual counterparts.

Some will cite promiscuity among homosexuals as part of the “homosexual lifestyle” but one need only watch one episode of just about any soap opera drama on T.V. , or a glance at the pregnancy statistics among unmarried women to know that heterosexuals are promiscuous too. Indeed, the term “meat market” has been coined to describe bars where “friends with benefits” can meet to “hook up”. The fact is that promiscuity and the desire for sexual contact is a human condition, not a homosexual anomaly.

People use terms like “homosexual lifestyle” to debase people who make different decisions than they do, but the reality is that the term holds no real weight. It’s easy to use terms like that to keep people from getting to know each other, but the truth is that the things we all have in common are much greater than the sum of our differences. I have friends who are gay, straight, and I have a number of transsexual friends. The fact is that I have more in common with any of those friends than I do, for example with republican fans of George Bush, or People who choose the military for a career. Before you go nuts, I don’t have a problem with those subsets of people. I am simply making a point that we all have differences from each other, but that’s what makes us interesting as humans. We are mostly, when you peel away all of the layers of needless mistrust, the same on the levels that really matter. The only reason I should care who my friend sleeps with is if I want to sleep with my friend, or if my friend and I have chosen, as my lady and I have, to only sleep with each other.

May you look for the commonalities you have with others before judging them for being different than you.
